Window Blinds Safety

     Window Blinds Safety is a must if there are any small children around. You should always check all  of the older window blinds for safety, especially if there is a possibility they were manufactured before 2001. Do they have cords? If so you need to remember they can be a safety hazard for small children. Even though they appear to be harmless cords on can be the cause of strangulation for babies or smaller children.

     Most older blinds and shades probably will not measure up to today's National Window Blinds Safety Standards. It may be a good idea to replace those older corded blinds with newer window coverings that will meet all safety standards. Parents and caregivers should always be on the lookout for safety hazards and encourage using only cordless window blinds and other safer products in baby and small children's rooms.

     If for some reason you are unable to replace the older window blinds with today's safer versions it may be possible to retrofit. Ask most any reputable dealer and they can advise you on the best way and or place to find the proper instructions.

     You should also move children's furniture, beds and chairs away from windows so they will not be able to easily get involved with any hazardous possibilities. Never too late to be safe.

     When cords are still in use be sure to keep them short and always tied up high out of reach of the children. For continous loop cords make sure you have them securely anchored at both ends so a small child will not be able to become entangled. Lock all cords in position when not in use.

     Today's recommendations are to use only cordless window covering products in the baby nursery and other small children's rooms or play areas. And to be on the safer side it is best to replace all window products if they were manufactured prior to 2001.

     Never under estimate the safety possibilities for exploring small children. They seem to have a knack for finding ways to fall through a window or become tragically involved with window blinds, window shades or other window coverings.
