Installing Window Blinds

     You’ll need a few basic tools on hand when you’re installing window blinds.  You’ll need a tape measure, protective eyewear, a pencil, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, drill, drill bits, a level, the hardware included with the window blind set, and possibly a ladder or stepstool if your windows are located higher up in the wall.

     Here are the basics of installing your own window blinds.
          1) First, you’ll need to decide if you want an inside mount or outside mount for your window blind. 
          2) Next, measure the windows carefully.  Because most window blinds are custom fit according to the homeowners’ measurements, it’s critical that the measurements are accurate.  You’ve heard the saying, “measure twice, cut once”, right?  In this case it could be said, “Measure twice, order once”.  You don’t want to have to order another set of blinds because your measurements weren’t correct.
          3) Purchase the correct size of window blind or covering.
          4) Every window has a window stop at the top of the window, located on the window casing.  Remove the window stop.
          5) The window blind should include all of the hardware required for the installation.  Install the brackets to the side window casing at the top of the window opening.  The location of the brackets (flush with the frame or in a few inches) will depend on whether you chose the inside mounting or outside mounting position.
          6) The blinds should slide easily into the brackets.  The lift cord should be on the right side of the window and the wand on the left side of the window.  (This may vary if you have motorized window blinds.)
          7) Once the blinds are properly fitted into the brackets, place the end caps over the brackets and secure them with a few screws for stability.

     The actual details of installing your window blinds will vary a bit depending on the style of window covering.  Wood blinds and faux wood blinds may require anchors and additional hardware because of their sheer weight.  If you’ve opted to add a decorative headrail or valence, those installation instructions will be separate from the window blind installation instructions.  Roman shades or blinds can be mounted not only inside or outside, but also from the ceiling.

     The company from whom you purchase your window blinds should include detailed instructions for installing your window coverings.  If for some reason the instructions are not included, contact the company and ask them to send step-by-step instructions via e-mail or snail mail.

     Installing window blinds into your home, rental property, or office can be done without too much fuss or mess.  Blinds, shades, and vertical blinds are all relatively easy to install yourself.  You’ll be able to spend a little more on your window treatments if you know you’re not going to have to pay a fee to a professional installer.
